Best way to send email & photos.?

My girlfriend is on assignment in Russia. Their internet is not very good. She told me it took 3 hours to download a 2MB letter with photo attachments, and said to keep all emails and attachments under 0.5 MB. Is there anyway this can be done? Also where do I find the size of the email before I send it?
